If you’re anything like me, at some point in your life you have been completely overwhelmed by the idea that you “really need to get healthy” but have no idea how or where to start. There’s so much conflicting information out there and a lot of really extreme opinions about what is and is not healthy. It’s not surprising that it leaves us feeling like we’re not good enough and confused on how to move forward. It feels too big and unattainable.

I’ve discovered from my own health journey and from coaching clients that there are two mindset shifts that are crucial in cutting through the noise and making changes towards a healthier lifestyle.

Small Changes; Big Impact

It’s intimidating to view health as some big, abstract idea. So it’s important to break it down and start approaching health and wellness as a journey and not something you complete or achieve… it’s always evolving. Which means prioritizing your health is as simple as making a healthier choice, one time after the next. Not overhauling your entire life tomorrow, but making small, and better choices, consistently. Those add up! That might look like prepping overnight oats for breakfast instead of skipping that meal all together, opting for a lunchtime walk instead of scrolling through social media at your desk, or meeting a friend to take an evening workout class and dinner to catch up and connect instead of sitting at home all night for a Netflix marathon. Those subtle changes aren’t as sexy and fun as starting a detox program or cleanse, but they are what add up to a healthier lifestyle that is sustainable and that works for you.

Health is a vehicle for something more in your life

Being healthy for healthy’s sake isn’t the point. Where the magic happens is when you can connect to your why. What having your health enables you to do…it’s the vehicle that allows you to live the life you want. Just think about it in the reverse.. Illness and disease rob you of that freedom, so strong health enables that freedom. For me, I nurture my health so I can show up fully present in my relationships, be mentally and physically strong to serve my clients and achieve my business goals, and to inspire others to see what’s possible for them. That keeps me committed in way that striving to ‘achieve’ the perfect image of health never did.

So I invite you to pause and notice how you’re currently approaching your health. Could you benefit from a shift? Brainstorm 3 healthier choices you could make TODAY, and choose 1 to take action on. Consider your why.. What’s 1 reason you want to support your own health and wellbeing?  Write it down somewhere you will see it often.
