Helping others alters your mood to a more positive state

At The Hot Room, we create a community where anyone, no matter your ability, can feel safe and inspired to heal and strengthen your body and mind. Even if you’ve never heard the term “yoga high,” you’ve probably felt it – it’s that euphoric feeling you get after a great class. That feeling comes from the release of oxytocin and endorphins, aka happiness hormones. There are numerous studies that show these are the same hormones released when you volunteer your time helping others! In this time of COVID-19, I believe that our community has an opportunity to help others outside of our studios. And the good news is that from those acts of kindness, you can reap similar benefits you’d get from your favorite class. Helping others alters your mood to a more positive state and counteracts your cortisol (stress) levels. If you’ve been wanting to help in this time, but don’t know where to start, here are a few ideas.

1.     Deliver Food.

A huge way we can step up is to help families in our communities that have been impacted by food scarcity and limited transportation. Sign up to deliver food to individuals and families. Not only does it feel good to help someone out, it’s also an excuse to go drive around for an hour!

2.     Donate Blood.

Donating blood is a critical action right now, as volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need. By donating in this way, we can make a direct impact on the health of those in our community.

3.     Buy Coffee for a Healthcare Worker.

There are no words to fully express the gratitude we have for our healthcare workers. Tinker Coffee is doing their part to express gratitude through a favorite caffeinated beverage- cold brew. On their website you can order cold brew and designate it to be donated to hospitals and healthcare workers on the front lines.

4.     Support Local Restaurants & Buy Lunch for an Essential Worker.

Cunningham Restaurant Group has launched a program to feed workers at Indiana hospitals. For $65, they will deliver 10 healthy boxed lunches at hospitals all over the city. https://www.crgdining.com/Community-Heroes/

5.     Gift a Class in the Virtual Studio.

Do you know someone who could benefit from a class through our virtual studio? Here’s a way to impact both their life and support our local community. Purchase your friend, colleague, or family member a drop-in class and the $10 will be donated to The Patachou Foundation to feed food-insecure families in Indianapolis. During COVID-19 Patachou Foundation has stepped up to create and distribute fully cooked, re-heatable meals via community partners.

6.     Send an encouraging note.

Want to let the kids we serve know you’re thinking about them during this difficult time? You can brighten a kid’s day with a lunchbox letter made by you.

1. Write a brief note with an encouraging message, draw a picture, get creative! (Make one or as many as you like.)

2. Drop off your letters in the plastic bin behind our kitchen (no envelope required) or mail them to The Patachou Foundation: 4565 Marcy Ln., Indianapolis, IN 46205. We’ll hold onto them for a bit to ensure we aren’t spreading germs.

3. Your letters will be distributed to kids each week along with our scratch-made meals. There’s no deadline. We’ll keep passing your letters along until kids are able to go back to school.
